A Grafton man allegedly killed his wife, then stabbed himself in the neck with a knife.

GRAFTON, MA — A Grafton man allegedly killed his wife, then stabbed himself in the neck with a knife, officials said.

Police were led to the home by a the couple's five-year-old daughter, who was found in her pajamas on a busy street.

Michael Sugarman allegedly killed his wife Kelly Sugarman, 36, early Wednesday morning at their home at 55 Worcester St. in Grafton, Worcester County District Attorney Joseph Early said. A Grafton policeman spotted the couple's young daughter outside on Route 140 at 6:11 a.m.

According to Early, the girl led police to the house, stating that "Mommy is sleeping. Mommy is sick." The girl is in the custody of Department of Children and Families.

"It appeared she was walking to her pre-school. She's a bright little girl. An officer saw her on the side of the road," said DA Early.

Grafton police officer Thomas Michniewicz was driving on Worcester Street when he spotted the girl walking, and called for assistance. Sgt. James Crosby arrived and the officers found out the girl's name and residence, leading them to 55 Worcester St.

Police found Michael Sugarman, 42, bleeding from a knife that was still protruding from his neck, lying on the floor of the kitchen, said Early. After a search of the house, officers found Kelly Sugarman on the floor of her bedroom, where she was pronounced dead. Michael was treated at the scene for a knife wound and brought to an area hospital, where he remains. There was no update on his condition.

"Keeping in mind we are early in the investigation, the appropriate charges will be forthcoming," Mr. Early said. "The medical examiner has accepted the case and an autopsy will determine the cause and manner of Ms. Sugarman's death."

The girl was transported to a hospital for evaluation and then released the Department of Children and Families.

Detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney's Office are still investigating.
