Erratic Driving Ends With Crash Into Tractor-Trailer

The incident happened Thursday morning; witnesses had followed a driver from Grafton to Westborough.

An allegedly drunk Marlborough man drove erratically from Grafton to Westborough before his car ran a stop sign and struck a tractor-trailer at a Westborough intersection Thursday morning.

Westborough Police arrested Derek P. Azzolino, 21, of 175 Maple St. #103 Marlborough and charged him with operating under the influence of alcohol after giving him field sobriety tests, Police Chief Alan Gordon said in a press release.

Police also charged Azzolino with operating so as to endanger and failure to stop for a stop sign, Gordon said.

Police responded to the intersection of West Main and Nourse streets around 8:30 a.m., Gordon said.

Police received two calls: first for a white Lexus driving erratically, the other for the Lexus striking the tractor-trailer, he said.

Officer Domenic Annunziata responded, and saw "a 2001 Lexus with front end damage and a 2011 Peterbuilt tractor with minor side damage," Gordon said.

"The investigation revealed that witnesses followed the Lexus from Grafton and observed it weaving back and forth and stopping in the middle of the road," Gordon said.

"At the intersection the witnesses observed the Lexus fail to stop for the stop sign and to collide with the right rear wheels of the trailer."

Azzolini is being held at the Westborough Police Station pending his arraignment Friday in Westborough District Court, Gordon said.

The tractor-trailer driver was John Larochelle, 48, of 362 Pompeo Rd.,
North Grosvenordale, CT, Gordon said.
