Fire Breaks Out at Millbury Fire Chief's Home

"It is certainly a different feeling to be on the other side of a fire."

MILLBURY, MA — Fire Chief Richard Hamilton says he tries to be a "practice what you preach kind of guy."

His good practices, both as a homeowner and a fire chief, helped save his own home from too much destruction on Tuesday evening.

Hamilton posted on his Facebook page that the fire at his own home started when a laptop ignited a mattress on fire.

"Jake and I were gone and Susan and Chelsea attempted to put it out," he wrote. "They took in some smoke but thanks to the fantastic crew from Med-Star, were treated on scene. It was a good thing I had working smoke detectors and a fire extinguisher nearby."

Hamilton posted sincere thank yous to Assistant Chief Brian Gasco for containing the fire to one room and to Officers Daly and Gasco for their quick assistance.

"I happen to be at the Explorers meeting at station 3," he wrote. "That felt like the longest ride ever to respond to a fire. Thanks to everyone that reached out to me to offer help. We are doing OK and have some cleaning to do. It is certainly a different feeling to be on the other side of a fire."
