This time of year we look forward pulling out our favorite sweaters, bundling up under scarves and hats and putting on our favorite furry boats. You may even have saved a coupon for a new winter coat!
Here is a way to stay warm without spending a dime or layering up more: use your breath.
In yoga, practitioners use the ujjayi or yoga breath to calm the mind and connect to the body; it is both energizing and relaxing. This breath has the added benefit of heating your body from the inside out. It’s a great thing to use when you are waiting for the commuter rail, doing yard work or just enjoying some time outside on these chilly fall days.

If you have never done it before ujjayi can sometimes be a little tricky, but it comes along in time. Ujjayi is performed by taking a deep inhale through the nose, and then with the lips closed taking an exhale through the nose. During the exhale you make an ocean-like sound (think Darth Vader) in the back of your throat.
Practice a few times and then let it go; come back to your ujjayi breath anytime you are feeling overwhelmed, tired, cold or all three!

Until next time...stay fit, have fun and live a little :).
