New Bike Racing Track to be Part of Bike Day Fun at Buker

Students at Buker Elementary School will learn about the rules of the road while bicycling as summer gets closer.

Wednesday is Bike Day at Buker Elementary School in Wenham.

It will start with a Bike Safety assembly in the gym at 8:30 a.m and end with the Friends of Buker Bike Day at 1 p.m.

With less than 20 days of school to go, the event is part of the school’s activities to gear up students for summer.

During the morning assembly, Wenham Police Officer William Foley and Heather Ross from the MassDOT Safe Routes to School program will show students how to stay safe while riding a bike.

The students will, for example, learn about dangers while riding a bicycle including drivers exiting driveways or riding along side a parked car.  They will also learn to follow the road rules for hear about state law that requires anyone under 17 to wear a helmet while riding a bike. Students will learn about the importance of wearing a helmet every time they ride a bike and how to properly wear a helmet.

After school, the community is invited to become involved when Friends of Buker host Bike Day to practice safe riding skills.  Pinnacle Bike Works of Beverly will transform the fields into a bike racing track with all new equipment. Safety demonstrations and information will be available along the driveway on School Street.
