Sondheim's COMPANY Performed July 10-19

Community House Theater 284 Bay Road Hamilton

Stephen Sondheim once said: “I prefer neurotic people. I like to hear rumblings beneath the surface.” In Sondheim’s play COMPANY, confirmed bachelor, Robert, on the night of his 35th birthday, contemplates his unmarried state. Over the course of a series of dinners, drinks, and even a wedding, his friends “those good and crazy people [his] married friends” explain the pro’s and con’s of taking on a spouse. The habitually single Robert is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood during a hilarious array of interactions.

“Sondheim’s musical “Company” debuted on Broadway April 26, 1970 and was a trailblazer of dark comedy. It was groundbreaking in its time in that it brought the subjects of sex, alcoholism, drugs and homosexuality to the stage. Company is a dissection of marriage and relationships and how they work… it looks at what one might call the “gross generalizations” that resound in daily life of upper middle class America, yet they are not really gross generalizations, they really happen! The play pokes fun at the little jabs couples give to each other. Every audience member will see a reflection of themselves in at least one of the characters on stage. The original production was nominated for fourteen Tony Awards and won six including Best Musical, Best Score and Best Lyrics” Greg Warwick, Co-Director

“This show was groundbreaking in its time because it turned the spotlight on the audience. New Yorkers heading to Broadway in 1970 expected to see something that would transport them to another world. Instead, Company illuminates the humor and idiosyncrasies within our own worlds. It’s very funny . . . and it just might make you squirm a little.” Hannah Lynn Mell, Co-Director

The Community House Theater continues to expand its boundaries with the production of this rarely seen musical attracting actors from far and wide.
