Merchandise spilled off the shelves, but no one required an ambulance when an SUV crashed into CVS at the Shoppes at Hamilton Crossing Friday morning.

A report from the Town of Hamilton said a call came into the police and fire dispatch center at about 9:40 a.m. that a vehicle had crashed through a pillar and into the front of CVS at 15 Walnut St.

Hamilton Fire Chief Phil Stevens said an adult man from Wenham was the only person in the vehicle when it crashed. The drive was uninjured and the cashier at CVS was “shaken up,” but otherwise uninjured, Stevens said.

Stevens said the driver told first responders that he “thinks he must have hit the gas instead of the brake,” causing the vehicle to crash over the sidewalk and into the building.

The front wall and windows at CVS were bowed by the impact, but Stevens said the town’s structural engineer didn’t find any significant structural damage.

CVS Store Manager Lenny Stanwood said the store remained closed as of Friday afternoon and it is unknown when it will reopen. The drive-through pharmacy, however, is open for its regular hours so customers can pick up prescriptions.

The crash remains under investigation, according to the Town of Hamilton.
