Whitman-Hanson Girl Scouts Build Outdoor Skills and Memories at Camp Kiwanee

HANSON, MA — Camp Kiwanee was filled with Girl Scout spirit as Whitman-Hanson Girl Scouts gathered for a day dedicated to learning new skills, trying new things and enjoying one of Hanson's treasured outdoor spaces.

The Whitman-Hanson Girl Scout Camping Skills Day brought together Scouts of different ages for a full day of activities designed to give girls practical outdoor skills while building confidence, independence and friendships.

Throughout the day, Scouts rotated through a variety of hands-on stations. Girls learned first aid skills, created tye-dye shirts, practiced sewing, and safely learned the basics of whittling, turning ordinary sticks into their own creations.

The day also gave the Scouts plenty of opportunities to get outside and explore Camp Kiwanee. A hike through the property allowed the girls to experience the camp's trails and natural surroundings while spending time together away from screens and everyday routines.

One of the day's special highlights was a beekeeper presentation, where Scouts had an opportunity to learn about bees, pollination and the important role bees play in our environment. Some of the girls even had the chance to try on beekeeper protective gear!

Of course, a Girl Scout camping day wouldn't be complete without learning about outdoor cooking. Scouts were introduced to Dutch oven cooking and enjoyed meals together as part of the day's activities.

Even a little unpredictable New England weather couldn't stop the fun. Activities moved between Camp Kiwanee's outdoor spaces and the lodge as needed, proving that being prepared and adapting to changing conditions are camping skills of their own.

Beyond the individual activities, the day was about something even bigger — giving girls the opportunity to learn from one another. Older Scouts and volunteers helped younger girls throughout the stations, creating a wonderful example of the leadership, teamwork and sisterhood that are at the heart of Girl Scouting.

By the end of the day, the girls had learned new skills, made new friends and hopefully discovered something they would like to try again.

Events like Camping Skills Day are only possible because of the many adult volunteers and Girl Scout leaders who give their time to plan activities, organize supplies, teach stations, prepare food and help keep everything running smoothly. Whitman-Hanson Girl Scouts would like to thank all of the volunteers who helped make the day possible.

A special thank you also goes to Camp Kiwanee and the Town of Hanson for providing a beautiful local setting where young people can experience the outdoors, learn new skills and create memories together.

For many of the girls, the day may have been their first experience with some of these traditional outdoor skills. Hopefully, it won't be their last.
