Bites Nearby: French Memories

Bites Nearby is a weekly column by Patch's resident foodie, Christine Cassis, investigating the best dishes in and around Hingham, Mass.

So this week's gastronomic adventure isn't exactly in downtown Hingham, but the short drive to Cohasset is well worth it for the authentic French fare.

French Memories on Main Street in Cohasset is owned and operated by a truly French family, which is why probably why their food is such a treat. Great for lunching, FM is pretty affordable and completely delicious, but the proof is in the pastries.

Croissants, my friend, are not a semi-crusty creation defrosted in the back your conveniently located Starbucks, but instead, a flaky, buttery mess of a pastry that only a real Frenchman can perfect. And voila! French Memories has done just that, and is serving it up for breakfast, lunch, snack time and dinner.

Craving a croissant? Well, it's the perfect little companion with your morning coffee. Looking for a light breakfast, but still delicious? Well, you won't save any calories on one of these little buggers, I'm sure, but it's well worth it. Looking for something more substantial? Try the ham and cheese croissant for lunch (or a croque monsieur if you dare stray from the norm) and you won't be disappointed.
With a couple of different types of cheese and a whopping amount of sliced ham you just might never eat again. Well, O.K. that last part isn't true. But you'll probably never eat a ham and cheese elsewhere... If you can help it.

Feeling a little adventurous? Try an almond croissant or any of their tarts. Looking for more savory than sweet? There's an entire case of pates from which you can sample. Plenty of cakes, coffees, espressos and soups, too. Basically, anything and everything you could ever want. And don't forget to take home one of their specialty loaves of bread for later. You won't regret it. Word of advice: Buy a loaf with fruit or some sweeter flavors in it (i.e. cinnamon, sugar) and use it to make homemade French toast.
