Bites Nearby: Nino's Steak & Chop House

Bites Nearby is a weekly column by Patch's resident foodie, Christine Cassis, investigating the best dishes in and around Hingham, Mass.

Most people will tell you that if you’re looking for fresh, Northern Italian Steakhouse fare Davio’s is the place to be. The chain has locations in Boston and Foxboro, sister restaurants and a rather large following. But, if you’re not willing to empty out your wallet for a meal, the local alternative, , more than does the trick.

has what the other guys are selling for the fraction of the price. You can get a meal that goes above and beyond for around $20. In fact, I don’t think I’ve seen a steak priced higher than $30, a steal compared to the $40 and $50 price tags elsewhere in town.

Of course the filet is amazing, but if you’re looking to spread your wings a bit, try the blackened steak or the balsamico. You’ll die and go straight to heaven. I promise.

But Nino’s isn’t just a steakhouse. As mentioned before, it’s got Italian fare, too. So make sure to try some of your favorites, but bask in the fact that they’re homemade, fresh daily, and go for seconds on their amazing table bread.

Beyond the obvious recommendations and Italian staples (chicken picatta, chicken parm) you’ll want to check out anything “Milanese” style (scrod or otherwise), any and all of the pork dishes, and their seafood apps (calamari, spicy clams). Also, try the garlic mashed, butternut squash with cranberries, homemade polenta with peppers and onions for sides if you’re not a pasta person. Though, this might just be one you don’t want to pass up.

Nino’s has a great selection of red wines and wonderful desserts, too. But honestly, the best part of Nino’s is their ability to deliver an outstanding meal time and time again at an unbeatable price. This isn’t a steak house for special occasions, but for every day.  Make sure to get a reservation for weekend nights, and remember there are no free refills, so if you’re one to suck down the soda, stick to the water.

Check out Nino's Steak & Chop at 415 Whiting Street in Hingham.
