This Week's Focus: Compassion

Key Points:

·Compassion is a verb, not just a feeling – True compassion means taking action to relieve suffering, as Thich Nhat Hanh emphasized. It’s not passive empathy but active concern for the human spirit.

·Compassion is contagious – A single compassionate act benefits the giver, the receiver, and even bystanders who witness it, raising everyone’s capacity for compassion.

·Small acts can spark powerful change – Even a simple smile can ignite a chain reaction, helping others feel safety, happiness, and connection. You have more power to make a difference than you realize.

🆓 The teachings are given freely! If group meditation has enlarged and enriched your life, please consider donating to its nourishment with a donation. Your support makes all the difference. (Donations welcome via VENMO @Eileen-Shaw-8)

Compassion in Action

Contemporary society faces significant challenges that underscore the necessity for compassion.

Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” It’s the feeling that arises when we witness another’s pain and feel motivated to relieve it. Yet compassion isn’t merely a feeling. As Thich Nhat Hanh said, “Compassion is a verb.” It’s not a passive state of being. The true spirit of compassion is synonymous with doing.

Compassion is not concerned with material things. It’s concerned with the human spirit and soul. To be compassionate is to act—to alleviate the suffering of others, whether they are close friends or distant strangers.

Barack Obama once put it this way: “When you choose to broaden your ambit of concern and empathize with the plight of others … it becomes harder not to act, harder not to help.”

One of the most beautiful truths about compassion is that it’s contagious. A single compassionate act raises the level of compassion in everyone involved—not just the giver and receiver, but even those who simply witness it.

So may you take some form of compassionate action every day. Every act ignites a spark in its recipient and anyone watching. Be that spark.

We are all one family, all wanting the same things from life: safety, security, happiness, connection, peace, and love. You have the opportunity to help provide these things—whether you realize it or not. A simple smile could ignite a spark in another, who then goes on to change the world. You never know how powerful you are. But know this: you are far more powerful than you think.
