Honesty Rewarded: Hingham Bakery Employee Receives Nearly $2,500

For one employee at White’s Bakery in Hingham, an honest action has paid off.

One year ago, Kathleen Camilleri, who works at the bakery on weekends, noticed an envelope containing nearly $2,500 on a glass counter. After reviewing surveillance footage, it was apparent that a customer put down the envelope while making a purchase and did not take the cash when he left.

The envelope that was left behind resulted in a search for the man and media coverage around Boston. Despite the effort, no one ever claimed or inquired about the money according to Hingham police.

Camilleri, who is a college student in Rhode Island studying to be a pastry chef, may now keep the $2,480 in the envelope. She received the money from Police Chief Michael Peraino on Friday.

“Kathleen did the right thing of course, but in our business we don’t usually see people doing what’s right. It’s refreshing for us to see this and share it,” the police department said on Facebook. ”It also speaks of her character and integrity. We are proud to have meet her and wish her all the best.”
