Hingham To Conduct Town Meeting On High School Football Field

Hingham will attempt to hold a socially distanced town meeting on the high school football field on June 20.

HINGHAM, MA — First-and-10, going deep for the end zone, on the budget vote.

While communities throughout the region are grappling with how to hold already-postponed annual town meetings prior to the June 30 deadlines, some have embraced "virtual" town meeting proposals in the state legislature in an effort to allow social distancing and meet the state's orders on public gatherings. But Hingham announced Tuesday is it going in a different direction.

It is taking the annual town meeting outside.

The Hingham Board of Selectman announced Tuesday that, in consultation with the town moderator and public health and safety officials, the board had voted to hold the annual town meeting on the Hingham High School football field.

The meeting will be held June 20 at 2 p.m. with a rain date of June 21 at 2 p.m. The spaciousness of the 100-yard field would presumably allow for social distancing among town meeting members. The date is expected to fall within phase two of the state's reopening plan.
