Hingham, MA — 170 years after the founding of Hingham Congregational Church, the house of worship on Main Street is getting a facelift.

The church recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the multi-million dollar renovation. The project will address the exterior, infrastructure, and safety issues with a goal to update the building and bring it up to modern times.

“This renovation will preserve a historic building but it’s really all about the future and our ongoing determination to revitalize our community of faith. This renovation will help us be the best church we can be,” Senior pastor Rev. Dr. Peter Allen said.

As part of the construction, a time capsule that reflects the church in 2012 will be buried. A capsule was previously buried around the time of the church's opening in 1847. The original capsule has never been found.

In addition to church funding, the Hingham Community Preservation Committee will be assisting with funding a new handicapped ramp.

The renovation is scheduled to be completed in Spring 2017. Until then, services will take place at Old Ship Church.
