Martin is meeting her goal, which is evident by her nomination from April Whiz Kid .

The second grader said Mrs. Martin teaches her to be nice to everyone and makes learning "so much fun."

Martin aims to build a community where students work and play together, are kind to each other, look out for each other, and respect others' differences.  Martin understands that part of building a classroom community is about building self-esteem. Mrs. Martin loves to find her students'  talents and illuminate how great each child is.

“The children inspire me and enrich my life," Martin said.

Fourth grade teacher Tara Calianos recalled the time when Martin taught her daughters.

“Those were their best years; she really gets the kids," Calianos said.  "She understood the personality of my child."

Mrs. Martin appreciates being part of a teaching community. Her community classroom approach is based on the Responsive Classroom, a program offered to Hingham teachers.

Before becoming a teacher, Mrs. Martin spent 20 years working in public relations.

Thank you, Mrs. Martin, for shaping a better world for your students now, and in the future. Hingham honors you as an Extraordinary Teacher.
