HINGHAM, MA — The opening day enrollments are about where they were projected to be, Superintendent Dorothy Galo recently told the school committee.
At the Sept. 11 school committee meeting, Galo went over the latest enrollment figures. Kindergarten and pre-school numbers were not available in time for the meeting.
Overall, there were 16 fewer students on the first day of school than there were on the last day in June. The day one total was 4,231, down from 4,247.

At the elementary schools, the head count was 1,901, down by 45. The drop was anticipation and on target with the projection, Galo said. Of the 92 elementary classes, only four have 25 students and the average class size is 20.7.
South Elementary School remains the largest and growing. Galo said it could be due to it being a true neighborhood school.
