Hingham Man Charged with Assaulting Marshfield Police Officer
Stephen P. MacVarish, 30, was charged with drunken driving and assault and battery on a police officer.

A Hingham man faces multiple charges after allegedly assaulting a police officer in Marshfield.
Stephen P. MacVarish, 30, was charged with drunken driving, assault and battery on a police officer, failure to stop, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct according to the Marshfield Mariner.
Early Sunday morning, Sgt. Liam Rooney attempted to pull over MacVarish on Anderson Drive after the officer observed MacVarish’s vehicle allegedly tailgating the car in front of him. The vehicle initially did not stop, finally coming to a halt after about a half mile. MacVarish was asked by Rooney to turn off his vehicle, who refused and became argumentative.

As Rooney attempted to escort MacVarish away from the vehicle for a weapons search, the suspect allegedly grabbed the officer and became combative.
Rooney then took MacVarish into custody and formed the opinion that he was operating while under the influence of alcohol.
