Hingham Wins Court Battle Over Water Utility

A judge has ruled that the town has a right to buy Hingham water system from

Town officials in Hingham say they have won a legal battle to take over the town’s water system from the current private operator.

On Tuesday, a Suffolk Superior Court judge ruled that the town has the right to purchase a water plant in Hingham operated by Aquarion Water Company according to the Patriot Ledger. The town said they now have 45 days to agree on a price with the plant owner.

While an expert witness said the Hingham water system is valued at about $58.6 million, Aquarion says the purchase price should be $192 million.

A takeover of the water system would have to be approved at town meeting and requires a two-thirds vote.
