Historic Hingham Cemetery Vandalized, Headstones Toppled
Hingham police said nine headstones were found knocked over on Wednesday in the private cemetery that dates back to 1672.

HINGHAM, MA — Nine headstones in a private cemetery that dates back to 1672 were found toppled over on Wednesday. Hingham police said they are investigating the incident, which included several headstones that belonged to veterans, where they said headstones were "clearly knocked over."
Police said someone who regularly walked in the cemetery reported the damage early Wednesday afternoon. Because nothing was seen when crew battled a brush fire in a different part of the cemetery the day before, police believe the incident happened sometime late Tuesday or early Wednesday.
The nine headstones were in the same row and no other headstones outside of the row were damaged. Police said they do no believe any one group or family was targeted. The Hingham Cemetery is located on South Street with entrances on Main Street, South Street and Water Street. The headstones damaged were on a hill between the Main Street and South Street entrances.
