St. Paul’s Law Day Winners
eighth-grader Kathleen Ryan was the first place winner in the 2011 Law Day Writing Contest, sponsored by the Plymouth County Bar Association. In a ceremony held at on May 2, Ryan was honored for her essay entitled “John Adams and the Boston Massacre,” in which she explained John Adams’ role in defending the accused British soldiers in the Boston Massacre and its significance on our current justice system. This law states that all defendants, even ones who appear to be guilty, have a right to a trial and a defense attorney appointed by the court. Ryan applied this law to the trials for the Beltway Snipers in 2002 and 2006.
In addition, St. Paul’s fifth-graders Ann Lipsett and Jed Bell received Honorable Mention in the Law Day 2011 Poster Contest. Bell’s poster depicted John Adams' presidency and Lipsett’s poster illustrated his legacy as a criminal defense lawyer.

Derby Sixth-Graders Complete D.A.R.E. Course

On May 3, Derby Academy honored its grade 6 students for their completion of the D.A.R.E. course, a series of seven classes taught by Officer Rob Ramsey of the . In addition, the D.A.R.E. poster contest winners were Tessa Endressen (first place), Olivia Gomez (second place), and Jon Desai (third place). Two local celebrities attended the graduation ceremony: State Senator Garrett Bradley (father of sixth grader and D.A.R.E. course graduate, Amanda) and former Derby D.A.R.E. instructor and newly appointed chief of police in Hingham, Michael Peraino.
Thespian Night Supports “Wall of Fame”
presented Thespian Night on May 16 to support the “Wall of Fame” fundraising effort. Students performed in the auditorium and drama awards were presented. Parents and students also had the opportunity to purchase commemorative engraved plaques to be displayed on the wall of the auditorium acknowledging and remembering their drama participants.
Foster Fun Run Set for June 4
The annual Fun Run will take place on Saturday, June 4 at 8:30 a.m. Open to runners of all ages, the race will be an oifficial timed 5K run through Crow Point and a one-mile untimed run/walk. All finishers will receive a medal to celebrate their accomplishment, and all proceeds will benefit the Foster School playground. The race will be held rain or shine and will utilize professional timers. Registration forms available here.
