School Committee Gives Update on New Track Project

A three foot slope will need to be leveled before the construction of a new track.

The Hingham School Committee gave an update on the new Track at this week’s meeting.

School Committee member Caryl Falvey explained that designers discovered a three foot slope on the area where the new track will be built, and it will need to be leveled. Falvey said the slope is very gradual and runs from one end of the track to the other.

“It’s a work in progress...we are getting there,” Falvey said.

Falvey explained that the slope did not aid in the  deterioration of the current track that was originally paved in 1985 and resurfaced in 1995-96 .

The new track project will consist of surfacing of eight lanes, the installation of sandpits, the relocation of spectator seating and construction of 6 ft. fencing for long jump and triple jump venues, along with many other improvements.

The new track is expected to cost just under $500,000.

Also at Monday’s School Committee meeting, it was announced that the HHS Chinese Class will be heading back to Beijing in Spring 2012 and they have already started fundraising.  The class first went last year and HHS principal Paula Girouard McCann who attended the trip with 18 students said it was extremely successful.

In other school news, committee member Raymond Estes was voted chair of the School Building Committee.
