Wally the Green Monster Shares Lunch with HHS Students

After winning the "Play Ball" campaign for collecting baseball and softball equipment, HHS was visited by the Red Sox mascot.

The cafeteria was filled with high-fives and fist-pounds on Monday morning when students and faculty received a visit from Wally the Green Monster, the official mascot of the Boston Red Sox.

Around 700 students were able to see Wally throughout his hour-long appearance, that began at 11 a.m.  During the first and second lunch periods the Red Sox mascot took pictures, signed autographs, and even walked off with a few students’ lunches.

Junior Becky Fillmore was among the first seated in the cafeteria waiting for Wally’s arrival. Just a few weeks prior, Fillmore’s parents surprised her with tickets to a Red Sox game after receiving a good report card.

“I kept the ticket and it was the right thing to do because today I had Wally sign it,” said Fillmore, who awaited with both the ticket stub and her camera in hand.

earned the right to host Wally after winning the first-ever “” campaign, sponsored by both the Red Sox and Jordan’s furniture. The program collected used baseball and softball equipment to be given to the Reviving Baseball in the Inner City (RBI) program.

Junior Andrew Rocheleau contributed his used bats to the cause and was eager to have his photo taken with Wally.

“I have seen him at Fenway a couple times, but it’s better to see him at my own school,” said Rocheleau.

Accompanying Wally were the 2004 and 2007 World Series trophies that, according to Red Sox representative Julio Jeune, are priceless. Each is hand-crafted by Tiffany’s and consists of both platinum and gold, weighing in at approximately 30 pounds each.

In addition to the visit from Wally, the school received a $2500 Jordan’s gift card that will be put to a new teacher’s lounge as well as six tickets to the Red Sox game on April 16. Four representatives from the baseball and softball teams traveled to Fenway Park including Tom Castello, Eddy Bowler, Ally Walsh and Kelsey O’Neil. After an on-field presentation they were seated in the EMC luxury box for the remainder of the game.

Chaperoning the trip was assistant principal Richard Swanson, who was happy to see the Red Sox grab a 4-1 win over the Toronto Blue Jays.

“I think that was the turning point in the season, when Hingham High went to the game,” said Swanson.
