5 Things You Need to Know Today: July 21

Have you noticed it's hot out?

1. In case you haven’t heard, we’re having a heat wave. The National Weather Service is forecasting afternoon temperatures in the high 90s and a heat index as high as 104. An excessive heat watch is in effect, which means it’s a good day to find air conditioning and stay there and a bad day to do strenuous activity outdoors.

2. Chances are no one wants to hear you complain about the heat, but officials do want to hear your mosquito complaints. Really. Crews from the Central Massachusetts Mosquito Control Project will be in town next month to investigate complaints and breeding areas--and to spray if necessary. The best way to log a mosquito complaint is to contact the CMMCP at (508) 393-3055.

3. Speaking of providing feedback, you can help shape the future of the Holliston Police Department, all in a few minutes and without ever the comfort of your leaving air conditioning. Take the department’s strategic plan survey. The link’s on the department’s website.

4. You can also help pick Holliston’s next Citizen of the Year. Though you’ll have to wait until Monday, and actually venture out to find a nomination paper and drop box--, ,, , , the and --it’s not too early to start thinking about deserving residents. Celebrate Holliston will present the winner to the town on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Celebrate Holliston Field Day.

5. The meets tonight, the first time the group has gotten together since the town announced that that will bring two more tracts of rail bed under town ownership. Other agenda items include scheduling the next train cleanup and providing an update on a trails grant application process. The meeting is at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 703 Washington St.
