UPDATED: Baypath Humane Society Reopens After Quarantine
After three weeks of being closed for a virus outbreak, the animal shelter reopened yesterday afternoon.

Updated March 29: According to Liz Jefferis, Baypath is now taking in new dogs to the shelter now that rennovations have been completed.
March 8: When announced an , it was uncertain how widespread the infection was. Since then workers at the shelter were able to quarantine the animals they housed and specifically those infected by the virus; eventually getting a clean bill of health for all of the dogs at the shelter.
“All of the animals here are past the point of exposure and have been examined by a vet to confirm that they are not carrying the virus,” Assistant Manager Liz Jefferis said.

Since the shelter shut down on Feb. 14, five dogs had to be euthanized because they had contracted the virus.
“The dogs—a mother and her four pups—are now believed to have been infected prior to being brought to Massachusetts to be fostered,” a press release from the shelter said on Feb. 23. “The outbreak is now contained, and no other animals at the Hopkinton-based shelter have tested positive.”

The shelter is not taking in any new dogs currently as they are finishing some repairs that were started during the quarantine; but they are open to the public for anyone who would like to see the animals that are currently on the premises.
Jefferis said as soon as they reopened there were people coming by to look at dogs they had seen before the temporary closure.
