Get Your Yard In Gear for Memorial Day

Hopkinton Stone and Garden is ready to help you to make your lawn look summer smashing.

Although it seems such a long time ago that the unexpected summer hurricane tore through town, many are just now getting the full picture of the losses they took in their lawn. Fear not, Hopkinton Stone and Garden, Inc. is here to help.

“We carry perennials, ornamentals, shrubs and trees,” Manager Karen DeWolf said. “But we are really well known for our big, gorgeous trees. You can literally come in, pick out a tree and have your yard look very much the same as it did with a tree you may have had for years.”

Hopkinton Stone and Garden also caters to the brand new gardener who is not sure what they need to make their yard look stunning as we head into the warmer months.

“We tell people to start out front,” DeWolf said. “It’s all about curb appeal. Many people are either buying or selling a home and they want the front to look good.”

So, what is best for your front yard or your yard in general?

“That depends on the yard,” DeWolf said. “All of our plants and flowers are hardy as we do live in a winter climate, but it helps if the customer brings in a picture and if they know which way their house faces.”

It’s also important to have an idea whether or not the soil is moist.

“The real trick is putting the right plant in the right place,” DeWolf said.

Hopkinton Stone and Garden will happily deliver and install your plants, trees and flowers, but if you are interested in the stone part of their business, a landscaper will need to be hired or you can do it yourself.

“We carry pavers, veneers, and natural stone for walkways, patios and walls,” DeWolf said. “Many people use our stones to create patios around their pools or decorative walkways and walls.”

Just in time for the Memorial Day weekend, Hopkinton Stone and Garden has many big trees available for ice damaged tree replacement.

“I know many people are heartbroken about the loss of their centerpiece tree,” DeWolf said. “We specialize in really big trees and shrubs that are five to seven inches in diameter. They are big and gorgeous, and they are all grown locally at our farm in Auburn.”

Hopkinton Stone and Garden is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday. Their knowledgeable staff is happy to help with any questions you may have, and they love to see pictures so they can better aid you in your garden design. However, if you're looking to get anything done before your Memorial Day barbecues beware that they are closed this weekend.

Be sure to stop in today or tomorrow to get a head start on a gorgeous summer lawn.

“You are totally okay to plant now,” DeWolf said. “The weather is finally warm enough.”

This of course, presumes that Mother Nature doesn’t have any weird weather left to throw at us after the fall of 2011.
