The origin of the fire was determined to be improper disposal of embers from a wood stove.
According to Fire Chief Michael Cassidy, “ashes cleaned out from a stove or fireplace should be shoveled into a metal bucket with a metal lid, placed outside, on the ground, away from the building, to prevent fires.”
Cassidy added that “ashes and embers can stay hot for days and ignite combustibles, such as a paper bag or cardboard box.”
