Hey Hopkinton: Northborough Mom Makes Fancy Cakes

With so many friends and family members telling her they would never forget the cakes she made them, Janeen Callaghan launched A Cake to Remember in Northborough in October.

“I was always in the kitchen with my mom," she said. "I would make chocolate chip cookies for my brother or a cake for my Dad."

Janeen's daughters Sophie and Julia are continuing the tradition by helping mom in the kitchen.

Callaghan taught herself cake-decorating techniques and honed her skills to make what her fans call masterpieces.

"(My) mom is very artistic and her mom’s mom was very artistic," she said.

Each cake Callaghan creates is tailored to an event. She always uses fresh ingredients and makes the cakes from scratch. 

Retirements, weddings, anniversaries, holidays, and of course birthdays are among the cakes she has designed. Customers can choose any flavor or filling. Prices for fancy custom-decorated cakes start at $80. Prices are based on the size of the cake and how detailed the decorating is.

She delivers the cakes herself.

Her toughest customer so far was an 8-year-old neighbor who wanted a cake with Aladdin and Jasmine flying and looking into one another's eyes, Callaghan said.  She reports the customer was very pleased.

So far, Callaghan won’t take on more cake orders than she can handle personally. Her favorite part of the business is seeing people’s expressions when they see their cake.
