Holliston Barn Fire Cause Determined

Fire officials on Monday released the findings of the investigation into a barn fire that claimed the lives of over 40 animals Jan. 21.

HOLLISTON, MA – Investigators have deemed a barn fire in Holliston that claimed the lives of more than 40 animals accidental, the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Security said Monday. The Jan. 21 fire at 755 Concord St. caused about $500,000 in damage and killed dozens of animals.

Officials believe the fire was most likely caused either by a heat lamp or a coil used to keep water from freezing. Investigators said there were no signs that the fire was intentionally set.

There were about 60 animals in the barn when it caught fire. Nineteen animals – two roosters, four hens, four ducks, two rabbits and seven pigs – survived the blaze and are in the care of the Animal Rescue League of Boston.

A neighbor who called 911 told the Boston Herald she awoke to the "blood-curdling" screams of animals trapped in pens. The animals are owned by Rebecca Brodie of Brodie Farms in Holliston, who leased the barn, the Herald reported.

Multiple fire crews responded to the fire, which was brought under control within an hour. No people were injured.
