Hopkinton Man Runs 3rd Boston Marathon After Extremely Difficult Winter of Training

James Murphy has run since his youth on the playground. He began distance running 15 years ago. He has since run several marathons including Boston twice and New York City once.

As a quote lover, one of James Murphy’s favorites is from Randy Pausch, a Professor of Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, and Design at Pittsburgh's Carnegie Mellon University.

“It’s not about how to achieve your dreams.  It’s about how to lead your life. If you lead your life the right way, the karma will take care of itself.  The dreams will come to you.”

Murphy’s life includes his wife Allison who was his college sweetheart.  Their life also includes their three very active and wonderful, young boys.

Murphy is running to set an example for his boys although his oldest son Patrick told him recently, “It’s not a big deal anymore since you’ve already run three of them!”

Besides running, Murphy enjoys other outdoor activities. He hikes, surfs, camps and skis.

He got in about 30 days of skiing this winter.  He hopes that counts as some form of training as this winter was difficult for running.

Murphy runs three or four days a week from five miles to 18-t0-21 mile. He swims and stretches on off days.

“I get a kick out of the ‘sun runners’ that roll into town on Friday and Saturday from Arizona, California and Florida," he said.

"They have no idea how difficult it is to train for Boston in New England winters."
