Hopkinton Republicans Expected to Endorse Romney

On Super Tuesday Hopkinton Republicans are turning out to vote between seven potential Republican candidates, but Republican Town Committee straw poll results showed Romney as a clear favorite last week.

With Super Tuesday finally upon us, Massachusetts residents formally have the opportunity to support their candidate for president.

There are seven candidates on the ballot for Republican voters who continue to turn out today, although based on a straw poll taken last weekend at the republican Town Committee meeting it appeared as of Hopkinton Republicans were heavily in favor of Mitt Romney’s campaign.

Ken Weismantel, chairman of the Republican Town Committee, said while Romney was the clear favorite in the past two straw polls (he captured over 90 percent in both) it was not that clear-cut early on.

“I think in the first straw poll we did in the fall it was split pretty evenly between Herman Cain, Newt Gingrich and Romney,” Weismantel said. "But Romney was a clear favorite recently with Gingrich and Santorum only getting a vote or two."

Republicans across the state are expected to vote similarly according to a boston.com article.

“Polls show Romney with a commanding lead among GOP primary voters here. His Republican challengers -- Ron Paul, Rick Santorum, and Newt Gingrich -- have put little money or effort into the state,” the article said.

Romney has a strong base in the state that he developed while he was Governor from 2003 to 2007.

Hopkinton Town Clerk Ann Click said she expects the town’s results to be tallied around 9 p.m., so stay with Patch for an official bulletin tonight, and be sure to check again tomorrow morning for a more detailed analysis.
