The Home Inspector Will See You Now

Tom Towle, owner of H.D.B. Inc., has the best interest of the homeowner in mind when he performs his inspections.

Looking to sell your home? Afraid the inspector may find ants or mice? If the answer to either of these questions is yes, Tom Towle is your man.

Towle, owner of H.D.B., Inc., a franchise of Pillar To Post,  is in the business of inspecting homes.  As a former construction worker, he has a deep understanding of the inner workings of your home, and he thrives on helping others to make their house the home of their dreams.

“I worked for GM as a supervisor for a number of years, and prior to that I owned a construction business,” Towle said. “I now own a home inspection franchise which means I can inspect any home in the state and many of my referrals come from Kelleher Williams and ReMax.”

Many homeowners fear the inspector, but Towle is quick to point out that anything can be fixed.

“When I go into a home my main goal is to educate the homeowner or buyer,” Towle said. “Once I’ve educated them about how the home works, then I try to motivate them to care for it properly and finally I alleviate their concerns by offering them advice on how to hire a contractor. The biggest advice I try to give is don’t be complacent.”

Towle’s business is located in his home in Hopkinton, but he is happy to travel anywhere in the state to perform an inspection. He also travels to Maine, Rhode Island and parts of other New England areas.

Towle wants homeowners to understand that there are three major systems that are paramount to the well-being of a home.

“The three major things are the heating system, water and insulation and ventilation,” Towle said. “ Heating systems, especially gas do need some care. I try to educate about the importance of changing filters. Water and ventilation also needs to be addressed. If we see mold or black stains on the floorboards in the attic, people tend to panic, but it can be cleaned and repaired.”

Towle also notes that insects and mice can be a concern.

“Mice in the attic, particularly with forced air, can incite allergies,” he said.

Towle is available for inspections for both the home buyer/seller as well as the homeowner who may be interested in a presale inspection or a spring inspection.

“If the homeowner hires me, I can recommend contractors and give out costs,” Towle said. “This is not true when a sale is involved.”

Towle charges $395 for an inspection tied to the sale of a home, and $295 for a homeowner looking for information presale.

“I charge less if the homeowner is involved because they can answer questions about what works and what doesn’t, so we don’t have to test those things,” Towle said.
