Madeline Lipkin: The team is doing really well so far this season (4-0), and we are really going for league champions. My coach wants me to qualify individually for sectionals.

Patch: When did you start swimming? Other sports?

Lipkin: I started swimming when I was in 5th grade at the Westborough Tennis and Swim Club. I dance two times per week and participate in drama in the fall and spring.

Patch: What are your fastest times this season?

Lipkin: For the 100 meter freestyle my best time is 102.9 seconds, and for the 200 meter freestyle it is 218.0 seconds.

Patch: Swimming is for the most part an individual sport, how do you feel about that?

Lipkin: I generally am an independent person and in swimming you have to depend on yourself unless you are in a relay. It is basically you against the clock. In drama everyone depends on everyone else.

Patch: If you had to give up sports, what would be your passion?

Lipkin: Acting. I like musical theatre and have been to many plays and festivals. I went to Scotland last summer with the Drama Ensemble and it was an amazing experience.

Patch: Do you swim in the off-season?

Lipkin: Yes, I am on the USA swim team and I swim throughout the entire year.

Patch: What advice would you give to younger swimmers?

Lipkin: Never underestimate the impact you have in the outside lanes, as we found out in a meet against Dover, Sherborn last year. They got a lot of points with their swimmers in the outer lanes. Don't ever assume you can't win a race because you are in lane 1 or 6.

Patch: How do you manage sports and academics?

Lipkin: Academics alway's come first. I have to manage my time and prioritize. When we have late night practices, I make sure that I have all my work done ahead of time.

Patch: What are your plans for next year?

Lipkin: I am looking at the College of Wooster, in Ohio, and Gettysburg College. I received a deans scholarship from Wooster.
