These photos tell the 115th Boston Marathon story from early morning at the Hopkinton start line with people casting long shadows, to mid-morning when runners who made their way through the corrals to the start line got the go signal.
There are a few in-line skaters and bicyclists who took advantage of the closed roads to head toward Boston on a beautiful spring morning.
In photos where the flag is visible, it blows straight toward the city. The tail-wind helped Geoffrey Mutai set a world-record time of 2:03:02 in the race.

The Boston Athletic Association is now wrangling with the International Association of Athletics Federations to recognize the world record. The sanctioned world record is Haile Gebrselassie's 2:03:59.
Boston is not a record-eligible course because, unbelievably considering the hills in Newton, the course is considered downhill. Hopkinton's elevation is higher than Boston's.

On a very sad note, Grete Waitz from Norway, one of the pioneers of women's marathoning, died Tuesday after battling cancer for six years. Waitz, who won nine New York City marathons, a silver medal at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles and a gold medal at the 1983 World Championships in Helsinki, was 57.
