Selectmen Discuss Marathon and Future Election Locations

At the Jan. 3 Board of Selectmen meeting, the group had an agenda which cover a wide variety of topics.

At the first  meeting of the year, a small agenda and low attendance led to a briefer than normal meeting. Only three of the selectmen were present at the meeting, Brian Herr, John Mosher and Benjamin Palleiko. Here are some of the items the selectmen discussed.

1. The selectmen spent a majority of the meeting discussing a policy that outlines the relationship between the town and . Most of the discussion revolved around specific language regarding the running numbers that the town gives out to local participants. The selectmen also discussed the use of the bleachers on the town common, and who is responsible for that.

2. The board touched briefly on the open meeting law regarding remote participation. The law has been discussed in depth over the past several months but the members wanted to clarify some of the language to specify that it is absolutely a last resort.

3.  presented a request to have the election location changed for the Sept. 6 state primary. The election falls during the first week of school. Click said she received a request from Superintendent Landman to not have the election at the Middle School because it would interrupt the already confusing first week. “It’s going to be a busy election, we might get a bigger turnout due to the district change,” Click said.

The selectmen decided to not vote on the proposal because they wanted to discuss why the schools wanted the event changed in more depth. “It’s already difficult to get people to come out and vote as it is,” Herr said. “I’m worried that changing the location may really complicate things.”

4. The board opened the warrant for the annual town meeting in May. The warrant will remain open for the town’s departments until March 7.

5. During the future agenda items section of the meeting, Herr asked to continue talks about the Legacy Farms project in specific regards to working with the Demons Youth Hockey organization to . Town Manager Norman Khumalo said that he had a meeting scheduled and would present an update at the Jan. 17 selectmen meeting.
