The Bird in Hand is Worth Two Non-Local Shops

Looking for a great local shop with a plethora of unique gifts? If so, visit the located at 763 Washington Street. You are sure to find the perfect gift, and you will be greeted by co-owners Margit Price and Meredith Nunes - both of whom believe strongly in community and giving back.

“I had moved from England to Holliston in 2003," Price said. " In England, I had been a teacher, but to be a teacher here I would essentially have needed to requalify." I had always wanted to own a gift shop so when my neighbor and friend (Nunes) approached me it seemed too good to pass by.”

The Bird in Hand building has been in town since 1872 when it was home to the first bank in town - the Holliston Savings Bank.

“The walk -in vault is still here and is used for storage,” the Bird in Hand website reads.

The Bird in Hand owners are both members of the and believe that giving back is what keeps a community humming.

“We delight in taking part in town events," Margit said. "First, the Holiday Stroll on the Saturday after Thanksgiving , now in its tenth year. We have a new event this March- the Spring Stroll - set to take place on March 31st. Both are sponsored by the Holliston Business Association."

Price continued to say that  Bird in Hand also does two of their own fundraisers.

"We do the  Purple Event in April in collaboration with a Relay for Life team. All monies raised go to The American Cancer Society. We donate ten percent of all customer purchases for the day ( April 26 this year) as well as 100% of raffle sales. The other fundraiser we do is the Pink Event, in October, also to benefit cancer.

“Many of our vendors, along with us, will donate raffle prizes for the two fundraisers,” Price said.

One of the many unique facts about the Bird in Hand is that they try to sell items that are made domestically.

“We have 40 to 50 lines that are Made in America,” Price said. “Many of our items are homemade, and I feel we provide exceptional customer service. We also gift wrap items.”

The Bird in Hand also features unique wedding gifts.

“We offer personalized items for weddings,” Price said. “One of our favorites is a $170 personalized wedding plate, but we have a range of items.  We are one of the only stores in Holliston that offers wedding gifts.”

The Bird in Hand is open Tuesday to Saturday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
