Hopkinton Patch: When did you start playing soccer?

Elise Carlson: I started playing soccer when I was three years old. I used to play in my basement with my sister, using those really small nets. I have been playing soccer year round since then.

Patch: Is goalie your favorite position?

Carlson: I started playing goalie in fifth or sixth grade and enjoy the position. The toughest part of being a goalie is reading the breakaway. When the opposing team is running towards the goal, it is sometimes tough to know when to come out or to stay back and protect the net.

Patch: Do you have a favorite sport?

Carlson: I really like soccer and baseball, but I would have to say that my favorite is basketball.

Patch: How do you manage your sports schedule and academics?

Carlson: Usually I come home from school and do my homework, and then head to practice. I can also do half of my homework before practice and finish when I come home. I am in a good routine and am used to it.

Patch: Do you have a most memorable moment in soccer?

Carlson: Yes, during one of my games I was playing goal, and there was a breakaway. This girl was speeding towards me with the ball and I came out of the goal. She tried to kick the ball, and I was able to deflect the ball with my knees. The ball flew out and they didn't score.

Patch: Who is your biggest sports influence?

Carlson: I would have to say my older sister. I grew up watching her play sports. She is an amazing athlete. She played soccer and basketball in high school and I wanted to do the same thing.

Patch: How do you train in the off-season?

Carlson: After the travel seasons end, I play AAU sports. It gets me in better shape for the upcoming seasons. I train all year round.

Patch: What is the single greatest game that you've played in?

Carlson: During the first game of our past soccer season, our team had a bunch of energy. We beat the opposing team 5-1. I wasn't playing goalie this game and I scored a goal. It was a great feeling for all of us.

Patch: Would you like to continue playing soccer in high school?

Carlson: Yes, I plan to try out and will do my best.
