UPDATED: Buday Keeps Terriers on Top

Undefeated Coach Earns Player of the Week Honors

Trivia Question:  Which town resident holds the dubious honor of having his name engraved the most times on the Viagra Cup, the treasured symbol of Holliston fall softball superiority?  The answer would be Keith
Buday.

Since 2005 when the Holliston Super Senior Softball League debuted, the Viagra Cup has rested on an upper shelf at Casey’s, staring down upon the thirsty patrons like a king upon a throne.  Each year, a new championship team has had the names of its members immortalized on the cup, and five of those six teams count Buday upon their roster.  As a coach, Buday has won the last two championships, and his current team, the Terriers, are presently 5-0 by virtue of their 6-3 win over the Huskies last Sunday.  To recognize his coaching performance--as well as to potentially jinx his team, the Holliston Patch has named Buday its player of the week.

SENSEI OFFERS SELF-DEFENSE COURSE FOR WOMEN

Everybody was kUng-fu fighting

Those cats were fast as lightning

In fact it was a little bit frightening

But they fought with expert timing

-- Kung Fu Fighting by Carl Douglas (1974)

If the truth be told, I’m not sure that it is entirely appropriate to refer to the women who attendedJim Cormier’s “Ladies Six Week Self Defense Course” last year as “cats."

I also don’t know if they fought with expert timing, but being familiar with Filenes Basement’s “Running of the Brides”, I have little doubt that at times the experience was more than a little bit frightening.

If anything, the lyrics to Carl Douglas’ 1974 hit record Kung-Fu Fighting at least convey the spirit of training with Holliston’s “Singing Sensei”, while offering benefits that can be used for a lifetime.

Sensei Cormier is delighted to announce the offering of another Ladies Self Defense course, this year condensed into a five week session so as to insure completion prior to the holidays.  I don’t know about your home,
but at the Shannahan’s, the ability to body flip a sibling while racing to the
tree, or to inflict a swift karate chop to a brother in law’s arm as he reaches for his third helping of stuffing is of incalculable worth.

The course is limited to the first 20 enrollees, and is designed to safely and carefully teach uncomplicated and very effective self-defense techniques.  Classes are on Wednesday evenings from 7:15-8:15PM beginning October 19th.  The cost is $50 with a $5 discount for pre-registration.

The classes will be conducted by Cormier, a Master Instructor and 7th Degree Black Belt at Cormier’s Self Defense Academy at 67 Charles Street. Those interested should contact Cormier at 429-6688 or jimsensei@comcast.net

HOLLISTON'S STONE WINS UFC BOUT

Holliston native Ken Stone earned his first UFC victory on Sept. 17 with a first round victory via technical submission (rear naked choke) over Donny Walker.

I don’t know what that means, but it sounds impressive.

Stone’s victory came at UFC Fight Night 25 in New Orleans.

The UFC is the Ultimate Fighting Championship, an organization that promotes mixed martial arts competitions throughout the world.  Stone had lost his two prior matches.

Stone, who first competed in 2007, now has a 10-3 career record.  Weighing 135 pounds and standing 5’-8”, Stone fights as a bantamweight.

HOLLISTON MEN TO SERVE US ALL

wo young men from Holliston can now count themselves among the few and the proud.

Nick Linn and Tommy Dewar, both 2011 graduates of Holliston High School, began Marine Boot camp on Sept. 18, their first arduous steps in a journey dedicated to serving a purpose greater than themselves.

Dewar, an athlete while at Holliston High, and Linn, the grandson of a Marine, were recruited by Marine Sergeant Edrees, who has been busy
preparing them for their departure.

The two young men are scheduled to return to Holliston around Dec. 16, but until then, they would welcome letters from home. Their mailling addresses are below.

As Sergeant Edrees explains, “They are sons of Holliston, and they will be Marines for us all.”
