Updated: Twins Win HYBSA's Major League Division Crown

Post game ice cream substituted for champagne last Sunday, as the Twins defeated the Rangers 3-2 to win Holliston Youth Baseball/Softball Association's Major League Division American League championship game.

Both teams played superbly in this Father’s Day contest, which saw the Twins grab an early 1-0 lead, before falling behind 2-1.  The Twins were not to be denied, however, tying the game and then pulling ahead for the win.

The Twins brain trust of coaches Sano Obid, Dan Jewett and Dave Franco were delighted with the performance of their squad, and took no special pleasure in defeating Ranger’s coach (and League President) Charlie Jacobs' excellent team.

For most of the players, this was their last game on a standard Little League field, as they will be playing on the big diamond next year.

There were no surprises in the final week of play in the Holliston Senior Softball League, and when the dust settled following Sunday night’s play, two familiar foes stood face-to-face ready to fight for league supremacy.

The Braggville Athletic Club is no stranger to league titles, and having just completed a perfect 10-0 regular season, they are primed to reclaim the crown that escaped them in 2010. 

Standing between Braggville and that championship are the men of Dalton Road. They emerged from a complicated - yet eminently fair - tiebreaker rules review to finish second in the A Division, winning the opportunity to upset the Braggville steamrolling machine.

The teams had faced each other on May 22, when both teams entered with 5-0 records. Braggville prevailed, 9-5. The loss sent Dalton into a tailspin, losing its next three games before squashing the Lions, 15-9, on Sunday.

League observers name Braggville as the clear favorite in this championship contest, to be decided Sunday night at 6 p.m. at Damigella Field.  However, like the Boston Bruins, Dalton Road is a team of sound character and superb talent, and refuses to let history dictate the future. Let the games begin.

HOW WE MET NO. 4

Welcome to the fourth edition of  "How We Met," a feature in which Patch columnist catches up with local couples and asks them to share the stories of how their love began to blossom. This week, he profiles John and Mary Leary:

Question: How did you meet?

Mary: We met on a blind date.

John: Where was it?

Mary: It was in New Bedford.

Question: Who fixed you up?

John: A classmate of mine, and also a co-worker of Mary’s.

Question: Why did they think you would be a good match?

John: I’m not sure.

Mary: I was supposed to be his summer girlfriend. It was supposed to be over when he went back to college.

Question: Was there previously another girlfriend?

Mary: (nods)

John: Many for dances and then that was it.

Question: What was it that struck you that this time was going to be something different?

John: She was wonderful, she was athletic, beautiful ...

Question: And he was ...?

Mary: He was very handsome and I loved his smile and I still love his smile.

Question: So describe the first date.

Mary: We went to Purgatory Chasm with a bunch of friends and then we didn’t see each other for a few weeks. Then he called me again to go out. We went to a square dance down at the wharf in Mattapoisett, and that was it.

John: We’ve been together ever since.

Question: How many years have you been married?

Mary: 54 in August but we’ve known each other 57.

Question: And today (Memorial Day) is the 57 anniversary of the day you met?

Both: Yes!

THE CARNIVAL IS COMING!

The Carnival is coming, the Carnival is coming, the Carnival is coming!

Did you get the message kiddies? The Holliston Lions Club is pleased to present their 49th annual carnival, which begins this Friday at the . An abundance of school snow days had threatened to end this yearly tradition, but the powers that be worked hard to make it a reality.

The Carnival will run from Friday through Sunday. Friday is wristband night, where $20 gets the wearer unlimited rides from 6-11 p.m. Sunday will feature local youth bands as well as a fireworks extravaganza beginning at 9:30 p.m. The carnival begins at 5 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 6 p.m. on Sunday.

The Carnival is traditionally the largest fundraiser for the Lions, who dedicate all profits to a host of charitable causes.
