I remember first grade,

Way back at Andrews School.

Sitting in the front row,

White sneakers made me cool.

Today you’ll often find me,

With softball in my hand.

The steady voice of reason,

For Braggville’s rowdy band.

It’s been six months since Holliston native Mark Heavner opened Holliston Firearms on Washington Street and the hysteria with which some greeted his store’s arrival has dissipated into the simplest reality of commerce: a demand has been recognized and is being addressed. This might not sit well with those who try to direct the lives of others, but for citizens who understand and appreciate the Second Amendment, Heavner is providing a valuable service in a responsible and conscientious manner.

Heavner reports that “Business has been terrific. All the people who support me have come in and told me how much support I have. Things have been fantastic. I haven’t had any negative reaction in the store at all.

“We’re just trying to cater to the people who are in the shooting sports,” added Heavner. “We’re not selling guns to drug cartels, we’re selling guns to local businessmen and sports enthusiasts who go out and shoot lots of holes in paper and bowling pins and clay targets. It’s a huge sport that people probably don’t realize is out there.”

Heavner discussed his Browning Test Drive Program, where he travels to different ranges and lets people try out an assortment of fine shotguns before buying. Heavner noted that he grew up with guns, and used to go shooting and hunting with his father. He recently returned to the sport when his daughter went off to college.

Holliston Firearms is located downtown at 838 Washington St. The store is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday from 3 to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 4-8 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
