What's Better Than Cake and Lollipops? Cake Pops!
Barbara Fischer talks about the trend of cake pops, and her new place in the market.
Imagine a large cake, flavor of your choice, fresh from the oven. Now picture gobs of frosting and a pot full of dipping chocolate. Can you see it? Are you drooling? Now mix the cake and the frosting together into a munchkin shaped ball. Let sit for a bit in the fridge. Remove it from the fridge, add sticks, dip it in chocolate and voila a cake pop.
When Barbara Fischer first came across the idea in a book, it seemed like a logical jump from the dipped chocolate she was already creating to cake pops. Her company, 5Star Sweets Cake Pops and Chocolate was officially born last May.
"I had been making molded chocolate as teacher and sports gifts for a while," Fischer said. "I would often give a pop molded as a football or a soccer ball to a sports team for a job well done, or to a teacher for appreciation. The letters I got back were great, and I knew it put a smile on their face."

Fischer was in the market for a job, and seeking flexibility when she came across a book on cake pops at AC Moore.
"I was in a transition with going back to work," Fischer said. "My kids were all in school and I knew I wanted to work, but I also needed flexibility. I can do this (cake pops) from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. while the kids are in school, have time for them in the afternoon, and still go back to work if needed without ever leaving my home. I love that flexibility.”

She also loves the opportunity to give back to the community she loves.
"I donated pops to the library fundraiser," Fischer said. "The Princess Tea was held at the Doubletree Inn, and my cake pops were favors.”
Scuttlebutt is, they were well received.
Fischer is hoping that her cake pops will become the new trend in wedding cakes, shower or party favors or as a unique centerpiece full of color.
"I can create centerpieces with pops and fresh flowers," Fischer said. "I can also mix in molded chocolate in the shape of baby blocks, footballs, or whatever works for the client."
At roughly $2 each, the cake pops are also cost effective for a large group.
"The pops can be individually ordered or placed in a box with or without sticks," Fischer said. "For Valentine's Day, I am offering a box of six on a stick in a box and wrapped for $15. You could also order a box of nine, without a stick and fancifully wrapped for $20."
Interested in cake pops for your next occasion? Fischer needs roughly a week's lead time and an idea of your theme.
"I've always loved to bake, and sweets are my passion, " Fischer said. "Cake pops are trendy, unique and different. The best part? I can make them to order to fit your personality and event. People can place orders for one or one-hundred pops, whatever works best for them. "

"Brighten someone's day, "Fischer said. "Bring chocolate on a stick."
