3-Alarm Fire At Jamaica Plain Daycare Causes $1 Million In Damage

All five children in the daycare got out safe, but four adults are now displaced.

JAMAICA PLAIN, MA — Four people are displaced after a 3-alarm fire ripped through a JP home with a daycare in the basement this morning, causing about $1 million in damages.

All residents were safely evacuated without injury, according to Boston Fire Department officials, including five children who were in the day care at the time of the fire. The family's dog was lost to the fire, according to officials.

An unattended candle on the first floor started the fire, according to fire officials.

"It happened very, very, very quickly," said JP City Councilor Matt O'Malley. "This was an inferno. At one point you could see flames pouring out from all three floors. We're just really lucky we've got the best public fire officials in the country, in my opinion," he said.

Around 10 a.m. someone called to report a fire on Lamartine Street near the corner of Paul Gore. When the fire officials arrived at the two-and-a-half story single family house they reported thick smoke and flames.

This home last sold for $165,000 in December 2004, according to Zillow.

O'Malley was driving to a meeting near the Stonybrook T and said he drove by the house a couple of times as he looked for parking not realizing there must have been a fire already building inside. He parked on Amory Street and was walking back toward his meeting when he saw plumes of smoke.

O'Malley, who stayed for at least an hour, praised the Boston Fire Department and first reponders for getting to the fire quickly and for making quick work of the fire, which he said appeared to be taken care of within 30 to 45 minutes.

He also praised the community, which has already put up a GoFundMe to help raise money for the family who was displaced.
