Christine Fawson, an in-demand trumpet player, vocalist, and Assistant Professor, has been named interim Chair of Berklee College of Music's Brass Department. She's taking the reins for the Spring, 2013 semester while Tom Plsek is on sabbatical. Fawson’s appointment makes her the first female Brass Chair at Berklee and one of only a few women in this position at any college.
Fawson, a resident of Jamaica Plain, will be a featured performer with all-female big band The DIVA Jazz Orchestra, at Sculler's Jazz Club on Wed., February 20. She is releasing a new album of pop music with her band in the Spring – a departure from the jazz for which she is known.
While most Berklee brass players are male, 2002 grad Fawson is among a recent crop of standout female players from the college, including Ingrid Jensen, Karen Harris, and Robin Amie. Fawson teaches Singing for Brass Players, a class she designed, in addition to ensembles and private lessons.
Christine Fawson’s debut CD received great reviews in Down Beat, Cadence and Singer Magazine. Since 2002, Berklee alumna Fawson has been a member of vocal jazz group Syncopation. The group’s three CDs have been widely successful in the U.S. and Japan, leading to festival appearances in both countries and a feature performance at the Boston Pops Orchestra’s 4th of July Celebration. She played trumpet with all-female big band the DIVA Jazz Orchestra from 2004-2007, and has been a solo artist at festivals and concerts around the world. More info: ChristineFawson.net
