Boston Firefighters in Support of 2024 Olympic Games

The firefighters union feels Boston and sports go hand-in-hand.

Boston’s bid to host the 2024 Summer Olympics has been hit with serious opposition from thousands of local residents, politicians and business owners, but one major local organization is speaking out in favor of hosting the games.

The union representing more than 2,500 firefighters, Boston Firefighters Local 718, announced their support of the city of Boston hosting the 2024 Olympics on Thursday.

“As a union, public safety entity and as Bostonians, we believe this is a unique opportunity for the city to shine,” said Richard Paris, president of Boston Firefighters Local 718. “Boston firefighters have been protecting this city since our inception in 1635. Working with our brother and sister public safety agencies, safety is always our number one priority for those that live, work and visit here. We were “Boston Strong” long before the 2013 Boston Marathon and we will continue to be.

The firefighters union feels Boston and sports go hand-in-hand. By hosting the world-wide spectacle, the union sees the city propsering. The international stage will highlight Boston’s top attractions, while growing infastructure.

“Boston is synonymous with sports, but more importantly it’s the birthplace of America,” Paris continued. “Hosting the Olympics will put us on the international stage to showcase all there is to love about the city. We believe our city will also benefit from transforming its infrastructure to more usable space that will leave us as a better city than before the Olympic Committee found us. Improvements to our public transportation system, roadways, housing, cultural centers and public safety are just a few of the key improvements that will make Boston a stronger and safer city as a result of hosting the Olympics.”
