Out of this World JP Vows

The third in a series of photo essays inspired by celebrations at Jamaica Plain's historic gem - the Loring-Greenough House. Happy Mother's Day!!

I stood back to look at my new creations:  simple, understated turquoise signs adorned with classic ivory bows that would welcome guests to the first wedding I was to manage at the Loring-Greenough House. I stood back, proud. Subtle - but they did the job.

So, as the wedding began, I admit I was a bit surprised to hear the sound of the theme song from Battlestar Galactica waft over the North lawn...and then to catch a glimpse of the bride approaching the aisle resplendent in an astonishing hot-pink gown topped by a sparkling pink veil.  I smiled to myself and thought, “this is not going to be an understated wedding!”

As it turns out, I couldn't have wished for a more expressive, playful and fun-loving couple to initiate me. From a clever crossword puzzle printed right into the programs to challenge the guests as everyone began to gather -  to the deck of playing cards graced with the couple’s picture -  it was obvious that amusement was the overriding theme of the occasion.

Laughter followed their vows as the maid-of-honor and best man raised color coordinated lightsabers in a gesture of solemn space-age solidarity to end the ceremony. And, of course, the newly-wed couple’s first celebratory moment was to the tune of Star Wars.

Guests dined on a Lebanese-inspired menu to the delight of the many vegans in attendance.  Wedding cake followed, garnished by a Lord-of-the-Wings-inspired cake topper.  Cookies, brownies and pastries topped off the abundant dessert menu.

It was not all fun and games, though. One highlight of the evening was a performance of the bride's original choreography by a group of her ballet students. It added a moving personal touch to the celebration. And, although there was a playful spark in the groom's eyes all night long,  it was obvious he was  - seriously -  in love.
