Join New Normal Boston on Tuesday, May 12th at Porter Square Books - Seaport Edition for Laughs for LUCE, a comedy fundraiser for the Immigrant Justice Network of Massachusetts.
This is the second in New Normal's "Laugh Hard, F*** ICE" show series, pairing comedy with crucial fundraising in collaboration with Boston-area independent bookstores.

Join the JP Historical Society to learn about 1840s Hyde Square when German and Irish immigrants transformed the neighborhood with their businesses, schools, and institutions. See how in the early 1960s, Hyde Square changed again when Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican immigrants transformed it into Boston’s first predominantly Hispanic neighborhood. This tour also takes us to the home of Maud Cuney Hare, a prominent music historian and one of only two black women students at the New England Conservatory of Music in 1890. You will also learn about the property currently housing the MSPCA’s Angell Animal Medical Center, which was once a site of the Perkins School for the Blind. The tour will also walk through the Sunnyside neighborhood, the site of homes built by philanthropist Robert Treat Paine from 1889 to 1899 as a “worker’s utopia” for working families. All tours are free to the public and are offered on dates shown. Tours last between 60 and 90 minutes and are canceled in case of heavy rain. Artist Daniel Callahan presents a free, interactive workshop around his signature practice of “MassQing"
In this powerful and personal 2-hour workshop, participants will learn about Daniel Callahan’s “MassQing” technique, which uses the human face as a canvas and facepaint as a tool for reflection and transformation. Inspired by global body-marking traditions, artist <a href="https://www.danielcallahan.com/" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">Daniel Callahan</a> will guide participants in designing and painting their own “MassQs” to explore their identity, story, and creative self-expression.
Great for all ages, family friendly (children 12 and under must be accompanied by a parent/guardian).
Free; RSVP recommended as space is limited.
MassQing uses hypoallergenic, water-based children’s face paint. It is made for sensitive skin, and is 100% washable. Brushes will be sanitized.
This program is funded by a grant from the Fellowes Athenaeum trust Fund of the Boston Public Library
