An off-leash dog attacked and killed the resident great blue heron at the Arnold Arboretum in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood.
On Wednesday, August 19, a dog was allowed to run free through the grounds, resulting in the death of the great blue heron.

According to a poster that now hangs in the Arnold Arboretum, off-leash dogs have caused injuries to children and bike riders, have damaged turf and new plantings, and have left behind a significant amount of excrement.
The Arnold Arboretum welcomes dogs, but only on leash in the sight of their owner. Visitors to the grounds are asked to respect Boston’s leash laws and the well-being of others.
