Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. At Greek International Food Market, customers can enjoy a wide selection of traditional homemade Lenten meals including: Okra in tomato sauce Greek string beans (fasolakia) Stuffed grape leaves (dolmades) Giant beans baked in tomato sauce (gigantes) Bean salads and Mediterranean vegetable dishes The market also carries a large variety of Lenten pantry staples and imported Greek products, including vegan Greek pies, Mediterranean vegetables, canned and dried beans, and an extensive olive bar featuring a wide selection of Greek olives. This fundraising event is  to benefit the Ethiopian String Center, started by Kaethe Hostetter from Debo Band.  With upwards of 40 donated instruments, and a full sign up sheet in Addis Ababa of eager would-be string players, this project has the interest and the raw materials all ready to go! Let's take this dream into reality. The fundraiser will include music by members of Debo Band, the violin students of Sandy Keifer, and also rare Ethiopian cassettes. The Ethiopian restaurant Lucy Cafe is catering the event, and there will also be homemade tej (Ethiopian honey wine) and a variety of beer and wine. Keynote speakers will be traveling from far and wide, including the esteemed John McKay from the Amercian Embassy in Addis Ababa, as well as the Ethiopian/Mexican filmmaker Jessica Beshir.
