Jamaica Plain Could House Boston's 'Latin Quarter'

The official designation for 'Avenida de las Americas' was proposed at Wednesday's City Council session.

The area of Centre Street between Hyde and Jackson Squares - lovingly given the moniker “Avenida de las Americas” - may be Boston’s new ‘Latin Quarter.’

District 6 City Councilor Matt O’Malley put forth the idea at a meeting Wednesday to honor the area’s predominantly Latino population. The council agreed to take it into consideration, Universal Hub said.

According to the site, O’Malley said that 40 percent of residents on the street speak Spanish at home and that 65 percent of the 125 businesses along the street are immigrant-owned.

At the session O’Malley also proposed his “Puppy Mill Bill,” which would ban the sale of dogs, cats and rabbits in Boston pet stores. It would also prohibit the selling of animals in parks and city streets.

What do you think of the new name?
