Owner Katerina Iliades, whose family has served the Boston Greek community for decades, says many of the foods enjoyed during Lent reflect long-standing Greek culinary traditions. “Lent is a forty-day season leading up to Easter when many families embrace traditional fasting foods rooted in the Mediterranean diet,” says Iliades. “The dishes enjoyed during this time — from beans and vegetables to seafood and olive oil — have been part of Greek culinary traditions for centuries.” During the Lenten season, many Christians avoid meat and dairy, turning instead to a vibrant variety of Mediterranean dishes that are naturally plant-based and deeply rooted in Greek culinary tradition. Sophia Clarke, a member of the class of 2015 at Pomfret School in Pomfret, Conn., was recently part of an all-school academic experiment called <a href="http://www.pomfretschool.org/Page/Academics/Project-Pomfret" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Project: Pomfret.</a> A recent press release indicated that from December 2 to 17, students were tackling one of twenty-seven innovative learning exercises in place of structured class time. The list of topics included from geocaching, the LGBT community, engineering, theatre ande and the American legal system. Sophia was in the group of students and faculty who collaborated on a project entitled "Building C.O.U.R.A.G.E." (Conversations On Understanding Racial and Gendered Experiences), in which students were assigned the challenges and responsibilities of developing, scheduling, and marketing a conference/retreat that will explore issues of race and gender.
