Kids to Likely Get 40 Additional Hours of Learning Time

High schools would not be affected.

A proposal to permanently add 40 minutes of learning time to school days for Boston school kids has been initiated by Mayor Walsh.

The Boston Globe reported Friday that the mayor negotiated a proposal with the school department and the city teachers’ union to put a plan into action that would affect 60 elementary, middle and K-8 schools that don’t currently have an extended day. The plan still has to be approved by both teacher’s union members and by the school committee, the mayor’s office said in a statement.

CBS Boston reported students in traditional Boston elementary schools now are in class for six hours a day. Middle schoolers are in class for six hours and 10 minutes. Under the proposal, elementary, middle and K-8 schools would lengthen their school days by 40 minutes five days a week.

The next step in the process is for the proposal to go before the full membership of the Boston Teacher’s Union. If approved, it would then go before the Boston School Committee for a vote.
